At school I learnt American English and when I lived in UK it was British English

I think the difference here is not noticeable as we do not hear each other
Really, I've thought that in all our schools British English is taught.

In formal English yes, but in everyday English "kid" is highly used in the meaning of "child", so I think there is nothing to be surprised we are using this word here. If I said someone "I have two kids", I think the first thought struck him/her would be that I have two children, not two goats at home
