A doubling time of less than 2 days should arouse suspicions of either a possible ectopic pregnancy or a non-viable intrauterine pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancies are suspected when HCG levels increase from test to test but do not double. If youve had an ectopic pregnancy before, youre at greater risk for another and your HCG numbers will be given more attention.
Singleton and vanishing twin pregnancies have a wide range of acceptable HCG levels on a given day.
Unfortunately, the prognosis is poor for pregnancies that show low HCG levels and are slow to rise.
High levels may be indicative of a number of conflicting situations, including everything from a normal pregnancy to ovarian cancer to choriocarcinoma of the uterus or hydatidiform mole of the uterus.
Low levels may be indicative of dead fetus, incomplete miscarriage, or threatened spontaneous abortion.
Look most closely at progression: during the huge majority of early pregnancies (80-90%), the level will double every couple of days, or 72 hours. As your pregnancy progresses, levels rise and that doubling time increases. The expected doubling time for HCG levels:
Under 1200 mIU/ml: 48-72 hours.
Between 1200 to 6000 mIU/ml: 72-96 hours.
Over 6000 mIU/ml: more than 96 hours
