Most cosmetics ads are disturbingly misleading, so its always gratifying to see a company finally have to face the music for their deception. In this case, LOreal faced a mea culpa when it was revealed that actress and LOreal spokesperson Penelope Cruz was wearing false eyelashes in the companys ads for their Telescopic Mascara. Englands BBC reported that the nations independent Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) took LOreal to task not only for the false-lashes issue, but also for their wording of claims for this mascara, which could be interpreted as saying the mascara was actually making the lashes themselves longer (rather than creating the appearance of longer lashes). The ads were deemed misleading on both counts. LOreal responded by stating that using false eyelashes in mascara ads was common industry practice. Thats true, and in fact Ive never seen an ad for mascara, whether in a magazine or on TV, that didnt use false eyelashes. But that doesnt make it right, it just means the entire industry is deceptive. Yet this deception, among thousands of related ones in cosmetics advertising, is just something the average consumer would never realize. They would believe the ad. For the record, I can attest that LOreals Telescopic Mascara isnt nearly as impressive as the ads state. Id choose sister company Maybelline New Yorks Define-A-Lash Mascara Volume instead!
